Columbia Elementary School is proud to welcome back a dedicated and beloved educator returning to the classroom with renewed enthusiasm and, this time, as a Second Grade teacher. With more than three (3) decades of experience and deep ties to our school community, Ms. Carri Penafiel brings both wisdom and heart to the role.

“When I decided I wanted to return to teaching this year, my first thought was to reach out to Mrs. Wood,” she shared. “I loved my prior two years at Columbia and was excited for the opportunity to return. Second grade is a pivotal year in learning to be a reader and writer, my favorite subjects to teach.”

Her journey in Tuolumne County began with growing up in Sonora and attending Soulsbyville and Curtis Creek Elementary Schools. Inspired by her Sixth Grade teacher, Ms. Shelley Andrews, who later taught her again in Seventh and Eighth Grade, she never wavered from her dream of becoming an educator.

Now, with experience teaching every grade level from TK through junior high, Ms. Penafiel brings a wealth of insight to Columbia’s second grade team. Her educational philosophy is clear: “Always make decisions in the best interest of the kids. Optimize instructional time. Provide individual support. And make sure we’re having lots of fun while learning.”

Returning to Columbia has already been an exciting experience. “The campus has changed in wonderful ways,” she said, noting the new playground equipment, Frisbee Golf, and outdoor learning areas. “I haven't seen it yet...but there's a beautiful new art room I can’t wait to see!”

She’s also thrilled about Columbia’s transition into a Professional Learning Community (PLC) model. “I have extensive training and experience in this area and am excited to collaborate with my colleagues to help all kids achieve at higher levels.”

Ms. Penafiel's goals this year include building a classroom of self-motivated learners, supporting each student in mastering second grade standards, and celebrating successes along the way. “I’m so happy and excited to be back with my Columbia family,” she added.

Over the years, she’s created countless memories in education, from leading immersive living history trips to Sutter’s Fort to watching the transformation of educational technology firsthand. But her favorite memories? The smiles, hugs, and laughter shared with students through the decades.
