Middle School Monthly Update

 Students are working hard and are currently in the second trimester. We welcome Dr. Charles Neilson into the science room 25 for the 7th & 8th Grade. He is a former computer science professor. Ms. Winans will continue her fantastic support in that class.

In 7th grade math we are working on proportional relationships and how it is the building blocks for algebra. In 8th grade math the focus has been on solving systems of equations. **Reminder that homework for math is always 25 points on Get More Math for each day of school. This month I am also taking 10 top 7th and 8th grade students to the University of the Pacific to compete in a math competition called Math Counts. We will have a team of 4 plus 6 individuals at the competition. We will be competing against 8 others schools. The top two teams and top two individuals will go on the state competition in March at Stanford University.

7th Grade: Book Jacket Project

8th Grade: Reading “Outsiders” and will watch a movie at the end of the month

7-8th grades will also be focused literature from various artists related to February being a national awareness month for many different topics.

6th Grade is currently exploring the effects of persuasive language in our everyday lives and will be writing and presenting a persuasive speech on a topic of their choice in February.

Drama We are finishing up the auditions for our spring play. We will have drama work days on Saturdays for students to help paint and create the sets for the play.

Lifeskills– culinary, sewing, career and technical skills

Photography

Band is preparing for the Shared Concert with Sonora High School, to be performed on

2/12/2020.

Choir is learning new music for their Spring Concert and learning solfege syllables for sight singing.

Art students are currently exploring techniques and skills required to strengthen their drawing skills and are showcasing those skills through observational drawings and mixed media sketches.

Games and Strategy students are elective are currently building collaboration and communication skills through creative problem solving while participating in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

6th Grade is piloting STEM Scopes and we started studying cells; Students have created beautiful watercolor cell art and are starting to explore what is inside of a cell.
